Applying What You Have Learned

Below is a lesson plan that supports rule-based play. The lesson plans are intended to be an optional resource that you may adapt for use in your classroom.  The worksheets at the bottom of each lesson plan are part of the required coursework (not optional).

Please read each lesson plan carefully and then answer the question at the bottom of the page.

Materials:
  • Large board
  • Several plastic pirate hooks
  • Colored plastic rings
  • Hot glue gun
  • Paint
  • Paper and pencil (if desired) .
Procedure:
  1. Prepare for the lesson by creating the ring toss board.
  2. Hot glue the pirate hooks to different areas on the large poster board.
  3. Paint the board and give each hook a different value.
  4. Students can then take turns practicing their underhand throw (you can model it for them if it’s their first time practicing this skills).
  5. Instruct students to keep track of their points and refresh their addition skills.
 Questions to ask:
  • How many points do you get if you get it onto this hook?
  • How many points do you get if you get one on this hook and one on this hook?
  • Have you ever thrown something using this technique before?
Assessment:
  • Observe and record the student’s gross motor skills during the activity. Were they able to throw the rings underhand? **Do not assess the students on how many points they scored, but rather on their throwing technique.**
This is assignment  7 of 13.
