The sign language alphabet consists of specific signs that are used to represent letters. These letters are used to fingerspell words when there is no sign for the word. Often a word that has no sign will be described with other signs and then if there is no other option the word is fingerspelled. Names and other proper nouns are often fingerspelled until a sign can be established for them. In other situations it is just more appropriate to fingerspell the word or name.
