Supporting Self-Esteem

Page 2

A child’s growing sense of self can be supported most notably by supporting and encouraging their self-concept. Self-concept is the way in which one perceives themselves. There are many ways that caregivers can support a child’s growing self-concept, especially when it comes to communication.
The early childhood educators in a child’s life have a very important responsibility to help support and grow a positive self-concept for the children in their care. If a student doesn’t have this positive communication and support, their self-concept can begin to suffer as a result. It is important to help children learn what they are capable of and what their strengths and weaknesses are.
Remember:
Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Likewise, everyone’s definition of success is different. Jimmy’s idea of success might be running the entire length of the field without getting tired, while Bailey’s definition may be running half and then taking a short break.
