Common Questions and Comments

"What do I do if I have a child with divorced parents and they do not get along with each other? How do I invite them to a family event?"
- Elise
That can be really tough. I would suggest possibly talking to each parent about the event and trying to determine a timeline as to when they will be attending. Make sure that you are inviting both parents, do not take either parents side in their current situation. You could mention that it is a family event and how beneficial it is for their child for them to be involved with their child’s classroom and school. You could talk to your director about when the two parents are going to arrive so they are aware of any possible situations that can arise from them attending at the same time.

"I’m a director of a child care center and I cannot get any of my teachers to volunteer for after-hours family events. How do I include family events in my center without staff?"
– Carol
That is a great question. You could shorten the length of the events. If they were only an hour long, possibly they could spare a half hour to help out after their shift. You could try and schedule the later teachers to come in an hour later on the day of the event so that you are covered.

I would also suggest trying a different type of family event. You could try an event that goes on during the day. You could have activities in each of the classrooms during the day so the families could attend during their lunch breaks or alter their work schedule to attend. It could be a simple themed activity that they do with their child in the classroom for 30 minutes and then go back to work. The teachers will already be there and the families can see how the teachers interact with all of the children in a semi-normal day.
