Course Description

2 Clock Hours
Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, The Gold Cadillac, and The Friendship are just three of the many books written by Mildred D. Taylor. Taylor is an award winning African American author who combines her experiences and knowledge about the struggles of African Americans during turbulent times in American history to create classic pieces of children’s literature. Her work is incredibly important and speaks to the culture and awareness of the Deep South and all of its inhabitants throughout a stretch of time that was very challenging. This training will provide information about the author, her work, and the important message of cultural awareness that her work brings to a school-age program. ​
Course Difficulty: Level 2 - This course has entry level vocabulary that most students should be able to easily become familiar with. Assignments include peer discussion boards, open-ended and multiple choice questions. ​​​​

Learning Outcomes

  • Assess prior knowledge about cultural awareness in their program through open ended questions
  • Explain the cultural importance of Mildred D. Taylor works through short answer questions
  • Identify the negative impact of personal bias through peer discussion
  • Explain how to avoid biases through open ended questions
  • Discuss worldview and things that impact it through peer discussion
  • Analyze lesson plans for using Mildred D. Taylor books and others like it for teaching cultural awareness through short answer questions
  • Reflect on cultural awareness practices in their programs
