The lesson plans are intended to be an optional resource that you may adapt for use in your classroom.  The worksheets at the bottom of each lesson plan are part of the required coursework (not optional).

Lesson Plan: My Family Tree

Age Group: 
  • Infant
  • Toddler
  • Preschool
  • School-age
Objectives:
  • Children will create a family tree to enhance their sense of belonging in the classroom.
CDA Competency Standard:  
II.9.3a 
  • Candidate promotes children’s sense of belonging in the classroom community.
​​A) Encourages children’s social interactions.
Materials: 
  • Green Paper
  • Brown Paper
  • Photos of Family
  • Book: Me and My Family Tree by Joan Sweeney
Procedure: 
  1. Give each child a piece of green paper and brown paper and ask parents to help their child create a family tree with pictures of family members on them. If parents give permission, post the trees in the classroom for all of the students to see the diverse family trees that make up their class!
  2. Read Me and My Family Tree by Joan Sweeney to the children.    
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record children’s participation and development of their sense of belonging to support social and emotional development.
