Beyond Literature |

Children’s literature is a fantastic tool for representing diverse families but there are so many more options beyond just books. In addition to a print-rich environment using diverse topics and characters, a well-rounded and inclusive approach to supporting diverse families can also include environment and other materials.
Here are some suggestions for supporting diverse families beyond using literature:
Use pictures.
Enlist the help of families and children in creating a sense of belonging for all family types by hanging pictures of children’s families in your classroom. Children and parents can make collages with family photos, drawings, stickers, and more to represent their family unit in the classroom. Not only does this create an inclusive environment but it comforts children when they are away from their families. |
Include diverse materials.
Beyond books you can have diverse toys, decorations, songs, foods and more. Consider tangible and intangible items in your program planning when it comes to materials. It is great for children to see families that they are familiar with and unfamiliar with in the daily materials that they are exposed to. |
