Environmental Accommodations

Page 13

In addition to ADA compliance there are multiple things that can be done to make an environment more accommodating for a child with special needs.
As each child is different and each need is different, it is crucial to take a step by step approach when making accommodations.

Consider the challenges that this person faces.
  • Is it mobility?
  • Communication?
  • Feeding needs?
Picture
Understand what works best for them.
  • Do they prefer quiet surroundings?
  • To do things on their own?

Arrange furniture and materials to meet the needs of the children in your care.
  • Lower or raise tables to meet wheelchair or accessibility chair heights.
  • Provide a lower paper towel dispenser at the sink.

Adjust your routines and transitions.
  • Bring the class in from recess through the door without a step.
  • Add a few extra moments for bathroom breaks.

Check to see if these accommodations are working and change them if they are not.
