Applying What You Have Learned

On the following pages are lesson plans that can be used to integrate Building Community Through Circle Time in your program planning. The lesson plans are intended to be an optional resource that you may adapt for use in your classroom.  The worksheets at the bottom of each lesson plan are part of the required coursework (not optional).

Please read each lesson plan carefully and then answer the question at the bottom of the page.

Class Bracelets

Age Group:
  • Preschool

* This lesson plan can be adapted for school-age children.
Objectives:
  • Children will work collaboratively to achieve a goal
  • Children will identify that their differences can work together
CDA Competency Standard:
III.9.1a
The classroom environment provides opportunities for children to practice cooperation.
a)      Materials, equipment and activities provided help children experience working and playing in harmony
Materials:
  • Cut pieces of colorful straws
  • One pipe cleaner per child
Procedure:
  1. Give each child a handful of straw pieces. Teacher should have the pile of pipe cleaners.
  2. The teacher will take one pipe cleaner and put a straw piece on it, then pass it to the next person. That person will put a straw piece on the pipe cleaner and so on and so forth until the pipe cleaner is filled with straw pieces. This should be done with all of the pipe cleaners.
  3. Students should understand that each bracelet is different because each person added something unique to it. This makes each bracelet different, but similar.
Assessment:
  • Assess children based upon their willingness to participate and string the straw pieces on the pipe cleaners.
Extension:
  • Use this in smaller groups and have children give a compliment for each straw piece.
